Viper Interconnect
As of June 30, 2008, ABS announced the launch of its VIPER™ connector – a powerful new backplane and daughtercard interconnect platform providing 63 differential signals per linear inch at 6.4 Gbps data rates. The VIPER™ connector has been designed to meet the demanding requirements of the next generation of Avionic applications.
Amphenol’s VIPER™ connector is a shielded, high-density, high-speed press-fit, modular interconnect system. Optimized for differential pair architectures on a 1.8mm x 1.35mm grid, the waferized daughtercard assembly also provides single-ended and power wafer options integrated onto a stainless steel stiffener with stainless steel guidance and keying blocks. The backplane modules are available in 8 and 16 row increments on a 1.8mm x 1.8mm grid, with or without integrated stainless steel guidepin/keys. The new backplane signal contacts incorporate a highly reliable 4-points-of-contact beam design and the ground contacts leverage Amphenol’s 35-year experience with robust compliant pin and contact fork designs. The daughtercard and backplane contacts are stamped using Olin’s high quality C7025 copper alloy and plated using nickel underplate with 50 microinches of gold. Design variations incorporating RF and fiber optic modules into the VIPER™ stiffener assembly are available in addition to the standard 3U and 6U catalog configurations. Designed for harsh environments, Amphenol’s proposed VITA-66 MT connector provides a reliable high speed connection for the most extreme commercial and military environments. With up to 24 fiber optic channels per MT ferrule and 48 channels per connector it is among the highest density connector on the market. ABS developed the VIPER™ interconnect platform after extensive Voice of the Customer (VOC) interviews. These inputs drove ABS to meet or exceed future avionic high level vibration, shock and condensing moisture test requirements. Following the need for ruggedization in future packaging solutions that can also deliver more bandwidth down the road without the need for costly and time-consuming redesign, the VIPER™ connector system gives our customers the ability to scale from 80 Mbps up to 10 Gbps while maintaining their 0.8’ to 1.0” slot pitch and chassis design.
