The US Space Force has granted two companies, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, with contracts worth $30 million each to build prototype ground systems for the Evolved Strategic Satcom (ESS) initiative.

Boeing and Northrop Grumman are developing competing satellite designs for the ESS program, which aims to deliver secure communications and be capable of withstanding a nuclear conflict.

The Pentagon is dedicating $6.5 billion to the ESS program over the next five years, and the ESS satellites and ground systems will be part of the nation’s nuclear communication structure.

Lockheed and Raytheon will have 18 months to present their prototypes, with one chosen for further development.
