U.S. Approves $5.58 Billion Sale of 20 F-16 Fighters to the Philippines

The proposed sale includes advanced munitions, targeting systems, and support equipment, with Lockheed Martin named as the principal contractor.

The U.S. Department of State on April 1 approved a possible sale of 20 F-16 Block 70/72 fighters to the Philippines at an estimated $5.58 billion.

 

The proposed transaction includes 16 F-16C and 4 F-16D aircraft along with a wide array of associated systems, support, and munitions. Lockheed Martin is the principal contractor.

 

The aircraft package includes 24 engines and a host of equipment including 22 AN/APG-83 AESA radars, 22 Modular Mission Computers, 22 embedded GPS/INS systems, 88 LAU-129 missile launchers, and 22 M61A1 guns. Additional major systems include 12 AN/AAQ-33 Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods, 24 MIDS-JTRS communications suites, and AN/ALQ-254 Viper Shield electronic warfare systems.

 

The munitions included in the sale consist of 112 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs, 40 AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder missiles, 36 GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs, and multiple variants of general-purpose bombs including 60 MK-82 and 60 MK-84 units. Precision-guided munition kits such as JDAM tail kits, MAU-210 control groups, and MXU-651 air foil groups are also included.
