NASA has awarded Lockheed Martin a contract to develop the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) next-generation weather satellite constellation.

The satellite is part of NOAA's Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) program, aimed at advancing weather monitoring and environmental data collection. The program is intended to enhance weather forecasting, severe storm tracking, and climate research capabilities.

The contract calls for three satellites with options for four additional craft and is valued at approximately $2.2 billion.

The first GeoXO satellite is expected to be launched by the mid-2030s, aligning with NOAA's strategy to maintain critical weather observation capabilities.
