U.S. Space Force Awards $1.2 Billion Contract to BAE Systems for Epoch 2 Missile-Tracking Satellites
June 13, 2025
On May 29, The U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command awarded BAE Systems Space and Mission Systems a $1.2 billion contract to deliver 10 missile-tracking satellites under the Resilient Missile Warning and Tracking (MWT) Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) Epoch 2 program.
The agreement marks the second phase of the MWT initiative, with the first satellite delivery scheduled for fiscal year 2029.
The Epoch 2 satellites are designed to enhance global missile detection and tracking capabilities, including threats from intercontinental ballistic missiles and hypersonic glide vehicles. Each satellite will be equipped with advanced electro-optical/infrared sensors and communication payloads, supported by BAE Systems' Trek bus platform.
The contract also includes the development of a ground system for mission management, command and control, and operations support.
The MWT program is part of the broader U.S. missile defense architecture, which includes collaborations with the Space Development Agency and the Missile Defense Agency. The initiative aims to deploy a resilient, multi-orbit satellite constellation to provide continuous missile warning and tracking capabilities.
This contract is aligned with the Department of Defense's $175 million Golden Dome missile defense initiative. The Golden Dome aims to integrate various missile defense technologies, including space-based sensors and interceptors, to protect against evolving missile threats.
